2016 2016 Grenache

Grenache is a delicate, playful, zesty red varietal, originating from Northern Spain. It has found fame in the Southern Rhone region of France, most notably as a dominant varietal in the famed blends of Chateauneuf du Pape.

This bottling is 100% Grenache, and is a bright, fresh version compared to it’s European counterparts, meant to drink young.

The beauty of Grenache is it shows a little sugar, spice and everything nice. This wine is 100% dry, but it brings forth a fruit nose that is best characterized by strawberry rhubarb pie, baked with cinnamon and nutmeg. On the palate, it shows some rich tannin structure, accompanied by sour cherry and blood orange.

When searching for vineyards with which I wished to work for the 2016 harvest, I had the good fortune to find the Trails End Vineyard in Potter Valley. As relatively unknown appellation of Mendocino County, it has been a delight to get to know the region a little better.Part of the fruit from this pick went to the  FLEUR POUR MA MÈRE bottling released in the Spring of 2017, but just about 1 ton was held back to make a red wine.

The wine was picked on September 15, 2016. Once at the winery, it was 75% destemmed, and 25% of the clusters were kept whole. The wine received only foot treading and punchdowns, and completed  primary fermentation after 16 days on its skins. The wine then aged in one neutral puncheon and one neutral barrel.

On November 20, 2017 the wine went into bottle after a 14 month aging period.
